This piece is an exceptionally rare and distinctive antique commercial clothing carousel (commonly referred to as a haberdashery store carousel … Read more This piece is an exceptionally rare and distinctive antique commercial clothing carousel (commonly referred to as a haberdashery store carousel or shop coat rack), dating from the late Victorian to Edwardian era (circa 1890–1910). Unlike common residential hall trees, this high-utility piece was engineered specifically for upscale menswear shops, department stores, or grand commercial entranceways to display or hang heavy outerwear efficiently.

THE REVOLVING WHEEL: The center of the rack features a beautifully crafted six-spoke wheel structure. Each spoke is elaborately turned with classic Victorian rings and baluster shapes. Hidden just beneath the wheel hub is a robust brass collar mechanism. This allowed the heavy outer wheel to revolve smoothly on a central axis, allowing a customer or shopkeeper to spin the entire ring to browse items without walking around the rack.

The perimeter of the mahogany wheel is affixed with outward-pointing brass hooks for heavy winter coats. Along the inside lip of the ring, are smaller upright brass pegs, which were typically utilized to hold hats or walking umbrellas. Decorative, classical brass emblems are mounted along the outer facing band between the hooks, giving it a premium, branded shop look.

THE FINIAL & CENTRAL PILLAR: The center pole is crowned with an intricately carved finial. A masterful combination of classical architectural motifs designed to signify luxury and structural completion, it blends three distinct historic elements into a single cohesive carving comprised of: The Artichoke / Pinecone Core, the rounded, overlapping scaled top section. The Corinthian Capital Volutes, the prominent, tightly wound spirals flanking the sides just beneath the scales. And the Acanthus Leaf Shroud, the stylized, stylized leaves carved with deep grooves (fluting) that wrap upward from the base rings to cradle the scrolls and pinecone. The central support pillar transitions from the smooth revolving axle into a heavy, beautifully turned column that provides deep structural integrity against top-heavy tilting.

THE FOUR-WAY PEDESTAL BASE: To combat the weight of up to a dozen heavy coats spinning at once, the rack abandons the typical tripod leg style for a more stable four-way splayed base. The legs feature structural, geometric block-molding at the joints and clean, recessed reeding running down each foot, adding a touch of Edwardian tailored refinement to the lower half.
