BLUE ECHOES
Oil on board
Size: 13.6 x 28.7 inches (including frame)
A striking mid-century abstract composition that explores the tension between mass, movement and negative space, painted in oil onto board by the established Swedish painter Hans Osswald (1919-1983), whose works have been exhibited at the National Museum in Stockholm, Malmö Museum as well as The Brooklyn Museum.
Rather than depicting a recognisable subject, the painting invites interpretation through its bold architectural forms and layered textures. A sweeping black arc anchors the composition, while sculptural passages of white, vivid cobalt blue and warm browns appear to float across a tranquil slate-grey ground, suggesting the remnants of a constructed landscape or an imagined industrial horizon.
Executed in a distinctly mid-century modernist style, the work balances geometric abstraction with expressive, tactile mark-making. The composition feels carefully considered yet spontaneous, combining the structural confidence of post-war abstraction with the physicality of gestural painting. Areas of exposed underpainting and irregular edges lend the work an authentic sense of process, revealing the artist’s intuitive approach to building the surface.
The restrained palette of soft greys, charcoal black and creamy white is punctuated by electric cobalt blue and earthy browns, creating a compelling dialogue between cool and warm tones. These carefully placed accents energise the composition without overwhelming its quiet sophistication.
The paint surface is richly textured, with thick impasto passages applied confidently using a palette knife or broad brush. Heavy ridges of paint, scraped-back layers and expressive drips create remarkable depth, while looping linear gestures on the right-hand side introduce a lively counterpoint to the otherwise solid forms. The resulting surface is highly tactile, celebrating the materiality of paint as much as colour and composition.
This oil on board is presented in a silver frame. The painting itself is in very good vintage condition. There are scuffs to the frame and marks visible to the pale sections of the frame. There is a small area of wear to the top section of the frame.
Please note all of the artworks we sell are vintage and unless otherwise stated, their condition is typical for their age. This can sometimes include slight changes in colour, yellowing to the varnish, and minor bumps and bruises. We have tried to include as many close-up photos as possible.
