Hand-decorated using a traditional underglaze spongeware technique, this primitive folk art piece features mottled black and yellow-ochre tortoiseshell patterning, complete with a painted yellow collar and suspended bell. Small animal figures like this were heavily produced in the Staffordshire potteries region of England during the mid-to-late Victorian era for domestic mantlepiece display. Its hand-finished variations and highly expressive presentation offer a wonderful punch of historical character for traditional, transitional, or Grandmillennial vignettes.
