This exceptional late 19th-century Royal Worcester Parian ware figure, dating to approximately 1862–1890, depicts a young flower girl or allegorical figure of Spring. Attributed to celebrated Royal Worcester modeler James Hadley, the sculpture combines monumental scale with remarkably delicate modelling and is an impressive example of Victorian English decorative porcelain.
Standing approximately 62 cm / 24.5 in high, the figure is considerably larger than many Parian sculptures of the period, giving it an especially strong presence for display.
The young girl is modelled standing barefoot in a softly draped classical-style dress. Her carefully sculpted hair is arranged with an elaborate garland of flowers and foliage, with individual blossoms, leaves and curls rendered in fine detail.
Suspended from modeled rope straps around her shoulders is a beautifully detailed woven flower basket, filled with sculpted roses and foliage. She holds an individual flower in one hand, further emphasizing the botanical theme. The folds of the dress, braided ropes and basket weave demonstrate the level of detail characteristic of fine Victorian porcelain modelling.
Viewed from the back, the sculpture reveals additional details, including a finely textured wide-brimmed hat suspended behind the figure and the continued modelling of the garments and floral decoration. A naturalistic support behind the figure is integrated into the composition, providing stability while remaining decorative.
The sculpture is executed in unglazed biscuit porcelain, also known as Parian ware, giving the surface its soft matte off-white appearance. This material was particularly admired during the Victorian era because of its resemblance to finely carved white marble.
