Rare antique elevator floor position indicator featuring an ornate cast iron openwork design with applied gold-tone metal numerals and floor markers. An exceptional piece of early architectural salvage measuring an impressive 20 inches across and weighing approximately 16 pounds.
This substantial elevator indicator would have originally been installed in a multi-story building to visually indicate the elevator's position as it traveled between floors. The center opening accommodated the shaft and pointer mechanism, which is no longer present. The dial features raised numerals extending through the 23rd floor, with smaller round markers positioned between the numbered locations. The numerals and markers are separately applied to the heavy cast iron body and appear to be brass or bronze-tone metal.
Beautiful decorative openwork spokes and scroll detailing give this piece considerably more architectural character than many utilitarian elevator indicators. The design has wonderful early 20th-century industrial and architectural appeal. The original manufacturer is unknown, based on its design, materials and construction, it is believed to date from the early 20th century.
Wonderful original aged surface with oxidation, patina, remnants of old finish and wear consistent with its age and previous architectural use. **It has not been polished or restored.** This is a fantastic statement piece for an industrial loft, historic home, hotel, restaurant, bar, office or collection of antique architectural and elevator memorabilia. It would also make a striking piece of wall art displayed exactly as it is.
Please review all photographs carefully as they are an important part of the description and show the aged surface, patina and condition. The final picture of it on the wall is a mock-up done by AI, thanks!
