This West German porcelain vase by Kaiser, circa 1970s, is molded as a block of fossil-bearing rock: a four-sided form with a pinched, undulating rim, its matte white bisque faces embedded with ammonites, a scallop shell and a turret shell, each side different. The unglazed sculptural exterior contrasts with a smooth glazed interior. The fossil relief series belongs to the Op Art-inspired bisque designs associated with Manfred Frey, Kaiser's chief designer, and is among the most collected of the firm's 1970s productions. Marked with the blue crowned AK monogram and impressed model number 136.

An easy piece to live with: the all-white palette works in any scheme, and it holds its own as sculpture on a bookshelf, console or bathroom counter, with or without flowers. It pairs naturally with other white ceramics, coral, shells and natural finds.
