pierre vandel, born in 1939 in roubaix, began his career with a vocational certificate in industrial design and fitting before joining the engineering department of the french national school of bridges and roads (ponts et chaussées) and studying at the cnam (national conservatory of arts and crafts). He founded his own workshop around 1970 and launched his career in high-end furniture. His pivotal meeting with pierre cardin, who became a friend and advisor, opened doors to an international clientele in new york, london, melbourne, and tokyo. His creations in aluminum, lacquered wood, or plexiglas structures, enhanced with brass details and smoked or clear glass tops, embody the hollywood regency style so sought after today by collectors of 1970s and 80s design.

the piece
a cubic side table with an open structure: gilded brass uprights and crossbars punctuated by the company's signature cylindrical corner finials, and beveled clear glass side panels and top and bottom shelves. The interplay of transparency in the glass combined with the clean lines of the brass is typical of the "display case" aesthetic that pierre vandel employed on his coffee and side tables from this period.
