Measuring only 25 cm (9.84 in.) in length, this remarkable miniature demonstrates an extraordinary degree of craftsmanship. The hull has been individually shaped from solid wood, while the superstructure combines finely worked metal with carefully fashioned wooden elements. Despite its compact scale, the model incorporates an impressive number of individually constructed and even functional details. The ship’s rudder is movable, the propeller turns freely, and the separately made anchor can be moved. Further small elements of the superstructure are also articulated. Delicate railings, ladders, masts, rigging, deck fittings, lifeboat and numerous miniature nautical details have been individually executed, giving the vessel an unusually convincing technical character. The name petra and home port hamburg are prominently painted on the vessel. A painted 1957 appears on the rudder. Its position and execution suggest that it may represent the date of manufacture of the model, although this cannot presently be documented with certainty. The model is particularly evocative of hamburg’s long maritime tradition. For centuries, the port of hamburg has shaped the economic and cultural identity of the hanseatic city and connected it with international trade and seafaring. Within this busy maritime environment, tugboats were indispensable working vessels, maneuvering ships and other craft through the harbor and assisting with the everyday operation of one of europe’s great ports. Beyond its technical character, the petra possesses considerable sculptural and artistic appeal. The strong proportions of the dark hull, contrasting deck structures, tall masts and intricate metalwork create the appearance of a much larger vessel despite the model’s remarkably small dimensions. The slight irregularities inherent in the handmade construction add to its charm and individuality. Rather than the uniform appearance of a commercially produced decorative model, the petra has the character of an individually conceived maritime work, created with considerable patience, technical understanding and an evident fascination for ships. Its combination of solid carved wood, finely fabricated metal components, movable mechanical details, compact proportions and hamburg maritime character makes this an unusual surviving example of mid-20th-century european ship model craftsmanship. A highly decorative and collectible maritime object, equally suited to a sophisticated interior, private maritime collection, library, office or display cabinet. Dimensions: length: 25 cm / 9.84 in.
