Striking in its size and the delicacy of its design, this large platter dates from the 1940s and was made by Fernand Elchinger. from his "Terra Sigillata" collection, influenced by Antiquity and the Orient, it captivates at first glance with its intricate sgraffito decoration, where three horsemen on rearing horses seem to spring to life in energetic movement, as if lifted from an ancient Greek vase. The brick-red terracotta background warms the composition, while the engraved decoration unfolds in glossy black, with lovely light highlights that add relief and depth to the scene. The design is modern in its execution. Rare, this Elchinger ceramic is a collector's item with immense decorative appeal.
The platter is antique and dates from the 1940s. It is in very good condition. The back of the platter proudly bears the Elchinger factory stamp, a German signature given the history of Alsace during this period.
53.5 cm in diameter, 7 cm in height.
"Elchinger Ceramics" is a family business established in Soufflenheim, Alsace, in 1834. Since then, successive generations have produced a diverse and avant-garde range of ceramics. Léon Elchinger (1871-1942) made his mark with his artistic stoneware and magnificent Art Nouveau and Art Deco pottery, renowned for their vibrant colors and brilliant sheen. Less well-known than Chambost, Ruelland, Jouve, and Capron, Fernand Elchinger (1911-1975) was one of the great mid-century ceramicists. We are particularly fond of his free-form pieces, "handkerchief" vases, and especially his striking contrasts between deep blacks and vibrant yellows, reds, and greens! This piece has an attribution mark,
