The compact figure is distinguished … Read more A miniature Victorian Staffordshire poodle modelled seated and holding a loop-handled basket in its mouth. The compact figure is distinguished by its pronounced granular coat, formed from applied sieved or shredded clay across the head and body, with the white glaze and naïve modelling characteristic of this type of nineteenth-century figural pottery.

The figure is hollow moulded in glazed earthenware or Staffordshire porcelaneous pottery. Its underside retains a large irregular integral basal opening, an uneven hand-finished footrim and irregular glaze termination, with the interior remaining matte and unglazed. Contact abrasion and dark accumulation are present around the actual resting edge of the base. No factory mark, country mark or verified model number is visible.

The supplied research supports attribution to Staffordshire, England, with a Victorian working date of approximately c.1850–1880. The maker is unknown.
