Add a layer of museum-quality textile history to your space with this large-scale antique European micro-petit point tapestry. Executed with extraordinary artisan skill, the canvas features incredibly fine, miniature hand-stitching measuring under 1/16" per stitch. This miniature scale allows for a stunningly dense, painterly level of detail and soft shading across a captivating maritime genre scene. Figures in traditional historical attire gather on a shoreline alongside woven baskets, barrels, and thatched stone architecture, while detailed masted sailing vessels rest in the background harbor.
The tapestry is housed in a magnificent antique solid wood Victorian frame showing incredible architectural depth. The frame showcases a gorgeous, deep-toned natural wood grain cushion border with a rich historical luster, beautifully highlighted along the upper right side by a prominent, organic ribbon of lighter native sapwood that underscores its hand-milled authenticity. The outer trim features a deeply sculptural, hand-carved border of repeating notched scoop relief details that create a captivating play of light and shadow.
Incredibly, the reverse side retains its original, untouched antique crimson silk backing fabric, secured to the inner stretcher with original hand-hammered brass upholstery tacks and primitive round flat-headed nails alongside the original hanging wire. This rare feature provides impeccable provenance for collectors who prize authentic, unaltered 19th-century textile art. This stunning piece serves as an exceptional focal point for a library, study, or gallery wall vignette.

The hand-stitched micro-petit point yarn has beautifully faded over time, resulting in a sophisticated, soft, and muted antique color palette. The canvas remains tightly stretched. There is a visible hole in the canvas located in the front upper left quadrant (please refer to photos for details). The heavy solid wood frame displays excellent historical craftsmanship with minor surface scuffs, typical corner miter separation, and a visible area of structural wear/damage at the corner edge, which blends into its organic, hand-carved character. The original reverse silk backing fabric shows authentic age wear, edge fraying, and is torn in two distinct places, validating its undisturbed historical provenance. less
