An exceptional example of pre-Revolutionary Russian silverwork, this antique 875 silver cigarette case dates to the Imperial Russian period, circa 1908–1917, and beautifully combines refined craftsmanship with one of the most sought-after themes in antique decorative arts—the horse. The front is masterfully adorned with a bold repoussé relief depicting the finely modeled heads of two bridled horses, their expressive features and flowing manes rendered with remarkable realism and artistic sensitivity. The elegant composition captures both the power and grace of these magnificent animals, making the case especially appealing to collectors of equestrian antiques.
Crafted from heavy gauge 875 silver, the case bears the desirable right-facing Kokoshnik assay mark, confirming its manufacture during the final years of Imperial Russia before the Revolution of 1917. Introduced in 1908, the Kokoshnik hallmark has become one of the most recognizable and collectible symbols of Russian silver, representing the exceptional standards of quality upheld by the Imperial assay offices. The substantial silver construction, crisp detailing, and precision craftsmanship exemplify the high level of artistry for which Russian silversmiths were internationally renowned.
Weighing an impressive 216 grams of solid 875 silver, the case measures 4.25 inches wide, 3.75 inches high, and 0.50 inch deep. Beyond its striking repoussé decoration, the case features a sleek, thick silver frame with a beautifully understated profile that highlights the richness of the sculptural front. Good antique condition with light surface wear/scratches. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Rarely encountered with such a beautifully executed equestrian motif, this outstanding cigarette case will appeal to collectors of Imperial Russian silver, sporting antiques, horse racing and fox hunting memorabilia, and fine gentleman's accessories.
