Antique Chinese Qing Dynasty carved giltwood panel depicting a dynamic warrior battle scene with mounted horsemen and foot soldiers beneath flowering trees, circa 1880–1910. Deeply carved in openwork and high relief, the composition includes elaborately dressed warriors carrying pole weapons, horses in motion, an architectural gateway and dense branches framing the scene.
The carving retains substantial gold gilt decoration over a traditional red ground, with darker areas and wear contributing to its aged surface. Originally conceived as an architectural or decorative panel, it has been mounted on a dark wood footed display stand, allowing it to be presented as a freestanding sculpture on a console, mantel, cabinet or bookshelf.
COLLECOR'S NOTE
What distinguishes this panel from the many Chinese giltwood fragments found on the market is the complexity and animation of the carving. Rather than a relatively static arrangement of figures or ornament, the carver created an unusually crowded narrative scene: horses turn and overlap, weapons cross the composition, figures emerge at several depths, and the surrounding trees and architecture become part of the action.
Equally appealing is the survival of substantial gilding alongside exposed areas of the traditional red ground. That combination gives the carving the layered surface collectors look for in genuinely aged Chinese giltwood. The freestanding mount is another advantage: it preserves the character of an architectural fragment while making the piece particularly easy to display and appreciate from close range.

The gilt surface shows rubbing, losses and darkening, with areas of the underlying red ground visible. Expected small losses, irregularities, age cracks and wear are present within the intricate carving. The reverse retains its red-painted surface and clearly reveals the depth and hand-carved construction. Mounted on a later dark wood display stand.
