Vintage Tony Mafia Mother & Child Etchings — Set of 2, Artist Proof, Signed
Beautiful set of two circa 1960s etchings depicting a mother and child, attributed to Native American artist Tony Mafia (Robert Lee Alderson). Each etching is pencil signed by the artist in the lower right corner and marked “Artist Proof” (A/P) in the lower left corner.
The works feature a particularly charming personal inscription: “Betty we know you”, adding a unique and intimate connection to the pieces.
Both etchings have been newly reframed using acid-free materials, making them ready for display while helping preserve the artwork for years to come.
About the Artist
Tony Mafia (né Robert Lee Alderson, August 4, 1931 – May 10, 1999) was a Native American painter, sculptor, political muralist, singer-songwriter, and important cultural connector of the 1960s Los Angeles counterculture.
Known for his distinctive defigurative and expressionist work across multiple media, Mafia exhibited widely throughout Europe and the United States from the 1960s through the 1990s. His international lifestyle and Cherokee heritage informed a highly individual visual language drawing from both Southwestern American traditions and European Symbolism.
These etchings offer an intriguing example of Mafia’s graphic work and are especially appealing as a signed artist-proof pair with a personal inscription.
