The artwork belongs to the famous series ''Los Desastres de la Guerra'' realized during the years of the Independence Spanish War and published for the first time in 1863 and representing the horrors and the despair of the War. Numbered on the upper left corner. Etching N. 68. Good conditions except for a smal rip on the lower left corner. A friar is preparing to defecate after eating, as the spoon of his right hand denotes; he looks on the right, in the direction of a group of masks near a urinal; on the left, we can see a disordered pile of devout prints (a Virgin, the miraculous apparition of another), ex voto of wax and real (for example, trousers near a crutch), a mannequin with female clothes. In the background, in the shadows, other friars are in procession. This plate criticizes the atavistic religious habits of the Ancien Régime; the friar lives as a lord thanks to the ignorance of the gullible and superstitious believers (the ex voto and the images on the right) and to the manipulation (the masks) that the clerics make of these characteristics of the People.
