A striking pair of American mid-century modern armchairs made by the Custom & Modern Upholstering Co. of Gardner, Massachusetts — … Read more A striking pair of American mid-century modern armchairs made by the Custom & Modern Upholstering Co. of Gardner, Massachusetts — the legendary "Chair City" that once produced 1.2 million chairs per year. Both chairs retain their original maker's tags, including the shop's own custom work-order tag specifying the factory "Blond" finish and “Steel Gray” vinyl seats and backs.

The design is pure early-1950s Modern: solid blonde birch frames with dramatically splayed, tapered legs, cantilevered plank armrests on sculptural angled supports, and a floating backrest carried on a graceful bent-plywood strap. The seats and backs maintain their original gray vinyl with button-tufted seats and nailhead trim.

Documented, sculptural, and sold as a pair — an uncommon survivor from one of Gardner's smaller custom workshops, with paperwork intact.

Must have been produced after 1948 since its tag complies with the Louisiana Act 467 of 1948. The most likely production period is between 1948 and 1960, but exact production year is uncertain. See less
