A beautiful late 19th century Italian grand tour box featuring a finely executed pietra dura panel depicting white magnolia blossoms against a rich black ground. The flowers and foliage are composed from individually selected and precisely fitted pieces of colored stone, creating the remarkably painterly effect for which Florentine pietra dura work is celebrated.
The floral panel is set into an architectural black wood box with molded edges and raised on petite feet. The restrained exterior allows the colorful stonework of the magnolias to take center stage.
Dating to the late 19th century, the box is a wonderful example of an object collected during the grand tour and brought home as a sophisticated souvenir of Italy. It remains in wonderful antique condition. There is a small age related shrinkage split to the wood, typical of a piece of this age. The original key is no longer present. The interior is 1.5" deep.
