This type of transformation was particularly fashionable in 19th century France, where prized Asian porcelains were enhanced with finely worked bronze mounts and adapted into luxurious decorative objects.

The Imari plate is richly decorated in the traditional palette of iron red, cobalt blue and gilt with floral and figural decoration. The French bronze mount surrounds the plate with a beaded border and is raised on an elegant fluted pedestal base. Particularly striking are the architectural Greek key handles at either side, each embellished with suspended bronze garlands.

The Japanese porcelain dates to the 18th century, while the bronze mounting was added in France during the 19th century. The entire piece remains in wonderful antique condition for its age and would benefit from a gentle cleaning. See less
