A unique piece of authentic American material culture, this early 20th-century slant-lid desk box has been cleverly crafted using reclaimed timber from an antique high-explosives shipping crate. The box retains its bold, graphic original factory stencils, reading "EXPLOSIVE DANGEROUS", "50 lbs", and "1 ¼ x 8" (the historic industry dimensions for dynamite cartridges), alongside a prominent manufacturer’s code "K".
Originally a standard rectangular shipping container, a resourcefulness craftsman cut down the side panels to a steep angle to create a functional, sloped-front writing slope or document box.
The hinged lid features hand-applied reinforcing wood slats and a primitive, hand-twisted wire loop latch. Inside, a rustic, built-in horizontal partition shelf offers multi-level storage for letters, supplies, or daily essentials.
Constructed from dense, old-growth American pine with strong box joints, the wood exhibits a beautiful honey-amber patina, deep natural knotting, and honest historic wear that highlights its rugged, utilitarian past.
An exceptional crossover piece that perfectly blends early industrial Americana, military/mining history, and primitive folk art craftsmanship.
Excellent standalone statement piece for an office, library, or rustic lodge interior.
