Antique Mahogany & Birch Federal Tilt-Top Spider-Leg Candlestand, New Hampshire or Maine, Circa 1790-1810
A finely made Federal-period tilt-top candlestand, likely coastal New Hampshire or Maine — quite possibly Portsmouth. Features an oval mahogany top over a delicately turned birch pedestal with vase-form turnings, terminating in elegant spider legs. The refined proportions and fine turnings suggest urban cabinetmaking, while the birch secondary wood points to a northern New England origin.
Dimensions: 21½" x 15¾" top | 27½"H
Condition: Refinished surface with minor use and wear marks. Retains an old wooden turning latch to secure the tilting top, rather than a brass latch. The initials "G.W.B." are scratched into the underside of the top with a sharp tool, likely by a prior owner or refinisher — an interesting bit of the piece's history.
