A pair of genuine Cushman Colonial Creation armchairs, model 9082, known as the "Salem" design, made by the H.T. Cushman Manufacturing Company in Bennington, Vermont. The maker's plaque is intact and legible on the underside of one chair, and the model number 9082 is stamped as well, confirming both the maker and the specific design within the line.
Cushman Colonial Creations was the company's flagship furniture line, introduced in 1933 and produced for three decades. Designed by Herman DeVries, the line was known for rounded silhouettes and warm maple tones that updated traditional colonial forms for a more modern eye. Cushman furniture from this era is actively collected today, with pieces regularly appearing through specialty dealers and design-focused resale platforms.
The Salem design is one of the more substantial forms within the line. Solid maple construction, a high spindle back, and a hand-sculpted saddle seat, a heavier and more architectural silhouette than the flat seat Cushman dining chairs more commonly found on the market. Comparable Cushman armchairs of this style have listed for as much as $1,700 for the pair on the resale market.
Excellent condition for their age, with very nominal wear. Warm original patina, tight and sturdy joints, no cracks, breaks, splits, or repairs. Ready to use as a statement pair flanking a fireplace, anchoring a dining table, or as accent chairs in a study.
