The artwork belongs to the famous series ''Los Desastres de la Guerra'' realized during the years of the Independence Spanish War and published for the first time in 1863 and representing the horrors and the despair of the War. Numbered on the upper left corner. Etching N. 66. Good conditions. A donkey carries an urn in which lies the incorrupt body of a venerable character; around, the devotees who attend the procession kneel and pray in front of the relic. The donkey is a symbol of ignorance and stupidity; following certain apologists of the time, the press could be interpreted as a moral satire against vanity, meaning that the donkey (literary paradigm of foolishness) believes that it is the object of the veneration of the crowd. Goya, however, has also vehemently criticized the submission of the people to the uses and customs of the Ancien Régime - especially those of the Church (the revered corpse indeed) -, the result of ignorance (the donkey), a theme that also occurs in Desastres. This emphatic whim is to be related to the following, the plate N.67. This artwork is shipped from Italy.
