Colorful Pennsylvania German folk art watercolor and ink painting by American artist Joan Raab, featuring a large heart surrounded by stylized tulips, flowers and scrolling foliage in rich red, green, yellow and black.
The composition is based on the Pennsylvania German Fraktur tradition and recreates a decorative ownership inscription for an 1822 Pennsylvania spiritual songbook belonging to Hanna Eignorn. The heart-shaped cartouche, elaborate hand lettering and bold floral decoration are characteristic of Pennsylvania German decorative manuscript art. Hand painted on paper intentionally aged and distressed to evoke an early 19th-century document, the work has particularly strong graphic appeal. Presented under glass in a painted faux-grain wood frame with deep green accents. Signed “Raab” at lower right.
The heart and floral imagery make it an appealing piece of framed Americana for a folk art collection or collected gallery wall.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Joan Raab (1929–1999) was an American folk artist and antiques dealer who specialized in watercolor interpretations of historic Pennsylvania German Fraktur. Working primarily in watercolor and ink, Raab recreated the elaborate calligraphy, stylized flowers, hearts and other traditional motifs found in early Pennsylvania German decorated manuscripts. Known examples of her work date to the 1970s and include deliberately aged papers and painted wood frames that complement their early American character. Raab was also recognized as a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.
