Pietro Francesco Gambone (Turin, c. 1682 - 1737)
Flower arrangement with a classical vase
135 x 109 cm - Framed 152 x 124 cm.
This work is accompanied by an expert opinion from Dr. Arabella Cifani (Turin).
The painting depicts a sumptuous floral composition that lovingly combines floral and sculptural elements in a perfect synthesis: the scene is dominated, on the right, by a large stone vase carved with Baroque-style pods, holding a rich garland wrapped around it.
Between the base and the architectural pedestal on which the vase stands are other lavish bouquets of cut flowers, including white and pink roses, anemones, carnations, and small wildflowers. On the lower left, a clump of other flowers and another large terracotta vase filled with lush pink carnations.
Dr. Cifani, in her critical study, attributes the work to the painter Pietro Francesco Gambone (Turin, c. 1682-1737), one of the leading figures of Piedmontese still life painting in the early 18th century. He was highly regarded and sought after by the nobility and the Savoy court of the time to decorate their grand state rooms.
Pietro Francesco painted interiors both at the Royal Palace of Turin and other important Savoy residences.
The outdoor setting, hinted at by the shadowed architectural backdrop on the right and the vegetation behind, harks back to the typical taste of stately gardens of the period, where nature and the artificial coexisted in sophisticated harmony.
As we can see in our work, the painter is distinguished by a soft and fluid brushstroke, and although he worked in the 18th century (the era of Rococo and Savoy Classicism), he maintained an aesthetic rooted in the grandeur of the previous century.
The large flower corollas appear lush and sometimes slightly disheveled, a typical Baroque device to evoke the theme of vanitas and the transience of beauty.
