Rare Chinese Daoist Religious Sculpture — Probably Fuxi (Taihao Fuxi)

A striking carved, polychromed, and gilt wooden religious sculpture, probably depicting Fuxi (Taihao Fuxi), one of the legendary Three Sovereigns of ancient Chinese civilization and an important figure in Chinese cosmology and Daoist tradition.

The sculpture is beautifully carved and retains substantial areas of its original polychromy and gilding, with exceptionally rich decorative details throughout. The figure is shown seated formally upon an elaborately modeled rocky throne, dressed in ceremonial robes and wearing a traditional square crown.

Particularly significant is the large Taiji (Yin–Yang) emblem prominently displayed on the chest, together with Bagua-related motifs incorporated into the robes and crown. These symbols are deeply associated with the principles of cosmic balance, harmony, transformation, and the ordering of the universe.

FUXI AND DAOIST TRADITION:

Fuxi, also known as Taihao Fuxi, is traditionally regarded as a primordial culture hero and one of the Three Sovereigns. According to Chinese tradition, he is credited with the creation or revelation of the Eight Trigrams (Bagua), a cosmological system that became fundamental to the I Ching (Book of Changes) and later Daoist thought.

The combination of the Taiji symbol, Bagua imagery, formal imperial-style robes, and ceremonial crown strongly supports an identification with Fuxi, although the attribution should be considered probable rather than definitive. The ritual materials originally contained within the sculpture may provide further clues regarding the specific deity or cultural figure represented.

ORIGINAL CONSECRATION CAVITY:

One of the most important features of this sculpture is the original consecration cavity on the reverse, which remains clearly visible.

A hidden cavity in the back is a traditional feature of many Chinese religious sculptures. During a consecration ceremony, sacred materials were placed inside the sculpture and the opening was sealed. This ritual practice, sometimes described in Chinese traditions as Zang Shen (藏神) or, in Buddhist contexts, Zangfo (藏佛), was intended to transform the carved image from an ordinary wooden object into a ritually empowered sacred image and receptacle for the divine presence.

The cavity in this sculpture is not a damage or later modification; it is a normal and intentional feature associated with the original religious function of the figure.

ORIGINAL RITUAL CONTENTS:

Accompanying the sculpture are the original materials removed from the consecration cavity, including ritual papers, metallic elements, mineral or stone objects, and other traditional offerings.

The survival of these materials is particularly interesting from a historical and ethnographic standpoint. They offer tangible evidence of the sculpture’s original ritual use and provide a rare glimpse into the consecration practices associated with Chinese folk religion and Daoist devotional sculpture.
