The sculptural collection … Read more A striking set of three vintage Postmodern occasional tables, most likely made in the Philippines circa 1980s. The sculptural collection combines textured cream-colored Mactan fossil stone with contrasting inset natural-stone tops in green, burgundy and richly figured gray marble.

Each table features a substantial rounded rim and bold architectural pedestal base. Two tables rest on hollow cylindrical supports accented by subtle vertical channels, while the tallest example rises from a rectangular cream-colored stone pedestal. Their graduated heights and complementary colors create a dramatic composition when grouped together, although each table can also function independently as a side table, drinks table, cocktail table, plant stand or display pedestal.

The geometric forms, tactile fossil-stone surfaces and colorful marble inserts capture the luxurious organic character of 1980s Postmodern design. The construction is associated with Philippine stone furniture produced for companies such as Maitland-Smith and Magnussen Furniture; however, no maker’s label has been located.

Natural veining, inclusions, tonal variation and fissures are inherent to the stone. The tall pedestal has a naturally occurring fissure visible across two sides. It is a characteristic of the material and not a structural defect. Vintage wear is consistent with age and use.
