1970s; Knoll International - East Greenville, PA
Iconic Mid-Century Modern Bird Chair designed by Italian-born American artist and designer Harry Bertoia. Its sculptural form features a high, gently curved back, wing-like arms, and a low reclining profile supported by Bertoia’s signature welded-steel wire frame. The molded upholstery cover retains its original purple coloring, while the polished framework is stamped “Knoll” along the rear edge. This chair has a companion available under SKU C-12872.
Introduced in 1952, the Bird Chair emerged from Bertoia’s experimental seating collection for Knoll, which explored how industrial wire could be shaped into airy, ergonomic furniture. Founded in 1938, Knoll became a leading American producer of modern furniture through collaborations with influential architects and designers.
