Original footed Argenta bowl designed by Wilhelm Kage for Gustavsberg, Sweden, and produced in 1949.
The bowl is made from stoneware with a mottled emerald-green glaze and hand-applied silver decoration. Its interior depicts a seated female figure surrounded by delicate botanical motifs. The softly waved rim is outlined in silver, while the fluted exterior features crosshatched silver panels above a broad foot.
Introduced at the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, Argenta became one of Gustavsberg’s best-known art-pottery series. Its distinctive silver decoration was applied by hand, fired onto the glaze and engraved to bring out the finer details.
Wilhelm Kåge was Gustavsberg’s artistic director from 1917 until 1949 and played an important role in the development of twentieth-century Swedish ceramic design. This piece has an attribution mark,
