Antique English Victorian Burl Wood Traveling Writing Slope / Lap Desk Box
A handsome late 19th-century Victorian traveling writing slope (lap desk) crafted with an exceptionally rich burl wood veneer exterior. When closed, the box exhibits a distinctive, elegant sloped profile that tapers beautifully from back to front. The perimeter of the lid is accented with a dark, contrasting ebonized trim, framing the vibrant, swirling natural figuring of the burl wood. The box opens via small brass butt hinges to reveal a complete, classic dual-compartment writing surface lined in its original dark purple/burgundy velvet. Both the upper and lower velvet-lined panels lift up to expose deep, clean document storage compartments underneath for stationery and letters. The upper desk interior features a central lidded accessory well with its original wooden turn knob, a curved horizontal pen tray, and twin corner wells. One well retains its beautiful, heavy cut-glass inkwell bottle featuring a faceted starburst cap showing authentic historic ink remnants. A key is included, charmingly adorned with an intricate silver-tone wire filigree cap holding a polished natural dendritic/moss agate stone fob. The underside of the softwood base retains a fascinating, faded handwritten cursive signature in graphite/ink—providing a wonderful glimpse into its historical provenance.
Era: Victorian (Circa 1860–1880)
Place of Origin: Western Europe (Likely England or Germany, given the structural layout and style of the handwritten cursive signature on the base)
Materials: Burl wood veneer, mahogany/fruitwood interior lining, softwood/pine core, brass hardware, velvet fabric, cut glass, dendritic agate gemstone
Dimensions: 11.5" W × 8.0" D × 4.5" H
Good / Very Good — Vintage/Antique Condition
This piece is in stable, highly attractive antique condition with wear consistent with its age and historical use. The burl veneer retains a gorgeous, warm honey patina. There is an authentic, minor chip/loss to the veneer on the bottom-front edges of the box. The plain underside shows expected superficial scuffs and scratches from sliding across desks over the past century. The hinges and lock function as intended. There is a visible area of chipping, wood degradation, and old stress wear immediately surrounding the rear left hinge plate, which is stabilized and adds historic character. The wood lining is remarkably clean and structurally sound. The velvet writing skiver is intact with light, even fading and minor surface wear along the center fold seam, but free of major tears.
