The chair is distinguished by its unusual large oval back, beautifully decorated with fine contrasting string inlay surrounding an elaborate neoclassical urn motif. Delicate contrasting accents embellish the central design, while the richly figured mahogany provides a striking background.

Gracefully shaped open arms, a sculpted solid-wood seat, turned legs and stretcher, and long curved rockers complete the design. The chair is attractive from all angles, including the unusually dramatic oval back.

Traditional solid-wood construction is visible on the underside, along with old incised workshop or assembly marks. No maker’s label has been found.

Condition: Good antique condition consistent with age and use. The chair retains an attractive aged finish with scattered scratches, rubbing, finish variation and wear. There is visible finish/staining wear along one arm and some separation at one arm joint, as shown in the detailed photographs. Additional age-related surface wear is present on the arms, seat and rockers. The chair has not been refinished.
