Vintage Chinese handwoven bamboo harvest or gathering basket dated January 1983, featuring a tightly woven rounded body, substantial triple-rib bent bamboo handle, wrapped rim and iron-fastened supports. Often described in the decorative market as a Chinese rice basket, this form belongs to China's tradition of practical rural basketry used for agricultural and household purposes.
Especially appealing are the original handwritten Chinese inscriptions on both sides of the central handle. One side reads 一九八三年一月, translating to “January 1983.” The opposite inscription appears to begin 趙家, or “Zhao family/household,” suggesting an original ownership identification; the remaining character is not sufficiently clear to translate with certainty.
The basket retains a beautifully developed surface from age and use, with variations in color, wear and oxidation that give it the character of an authentic utilitarian object. At 21.5 inches high, its strong silhouette and sculptural triple handle make it particularly effective displayed on the floor, beside a hearth or console, or incorporated into a collected interior.
