A striking piece of American studio craft — signed and dated 2007 by ceramic artist Hilda Kidd Wiesenmeyer. The bulbous, sand-toned stoneware vessel is wheel-thrown with a warm, matte, unglazed surface, and rises to a dramatic hand-woven collar of dyed reed in soft gold, sage, and dusty blue-grey tones. The reed is worked in Wiesenmeyer's signature "basket pottery" technique — a hybrid discipline merging wheel-thrown ceramic form with fiber basketry construction — radiating out over the vessel's shoulder in a scalloped, petal-like pattern before drawing back to a narrow, banded neck opening.
This mixed-media approach places the piece at the intersection of the American studio pottery movement and contemporary fiber/basketry art, appealing to collectors of both disciplines. The unglazed clay body provides a quiet, organic backdrop that lets the woven crown read as the true focal point — a sculptural, textile-like element rarely seen paired with stoneware at this scale.
Incised on the underside: "Kidd Wiesenmeyer, 2007."
