An original 1818 hand-colored botanical lithograph by Auguste Piquet de Brienne, offered fully framed in a custom triple-mat presentation of cool dark brown with a narrow icy-blue pinstripe. This is No. 1 in Brienne’s documented series of flower studies for Godefroy Engelmann, an early work by a pupil of Gérard van Spaendonck, from the same influential Parisian flower-painting circle that also produced Pierre-Joseph Redouté.

ABOUT THE WORK
Brienne’s flower studies belong to the earliest years of Engelmann’s Paris lithographic operation, established in 1816. Engelmann’s later liquidation records document a series of 70 flower studies by Brienne, while surviving museum examples confirm the numbered format of the project. This sheet is marked No. 1, and despite extensive research we have not located another institutional or market reference for this exact subject. A wonderfully period-specific footnote: an 1816 French “language of flowers” publication assigned Liseron tricolore, or Belle-de-jour, the meaning “Coquetry.”
