Offered is a hand-painted and burnished glaze vintage 1970s quail bird figurine made by Ken Edwards (b. 1926 - d. … Read more Offered is a hand-painted and burnished glaze vintage 1970s quail bird figurine made by Ken Edwards (b. 1926 - d. 2023) at his El Palomar studio in Tonalá, Jalisco Mexico, a province renowned for its earth-tone clay and for all the pottery and ceramic art created since the 1950s. Ken Edwards's signed initials are obscured by a sun-dried splotch on the bottom, however, he wrote "Mexico" in black ink on the bottom and the faint snail he rendered is visible.

"The Tonalá Museum stands on what was once the workshop of Ken Edwards who, along with his partner Jorge Wilmot, set up the town’s first high-fire ceramics oven between 1959-60. By 1985, the building was functioning as a museum, and the acquisition of a significant collection of indigenous ceramics lead to its establishment at a national museum level.

Born in the USA, Ken Edwards was educated in the Arts in Kansas City, Missouri and studied his art in Japan before migrating to Mexico in the late 1950s and establishing "El Palomar", the workshop in Tonalá, Mexico. Along with Wilmot, Edwards established a veritable mecca of Western Mexican pottery."

The quail measures approximately 4.5" W x 7" L (from tip of beak to tail end) x 6.75" H and is created with an avocado green-colored head and with plumage decorated in shades of blue and taupe. See less
