They remind me of the death masks that were popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, though the practice dates back thousands of years to ancient Egypt and Rome. The artist's initials, GG, are impressed on the interior bottom center.

Despite extensive research, I could find virtually no information about the artist - I was only able to identify his full name when I found a nearly identical previously-sold bowl in the Worthpoint database, which described that bowl as being signed on the interior with the name "George Gilbert." Similarly, I have no idea when this piece was created. The description of the previously-sold bowl on Worthpoint "presumed" that bowl was manufactured in the 1980s. As for the bowl being offered here in this listing, the condition of the bottom (having no evidence of wear from sliding around on tables or pedestals for decades), makes me pretty confident that this is a contemporary piece - certainly at least consistent with the Worthpoint author's 1980s presumption for the bowl in that database.

Opening measures about 18" in diameter. Has a footprint of about 11" in diameter. Stands about 9" tall.

Exceptionally fine condition. No chips, cracks, or unusual wear. Absolutely stunning.
