Beautiful vintage hand painted ceramic plate depicting the legendary Japanese tale of Love at Dojoji Temple, one of Japan’s most famous tragic love stories.
The Story of Anchin and Kiyohime
According to the legend, a young Buddhist monk named Anchin was traveling on a pilgrimage when he stayed at the home of a young woman named Kiyohime. Kiyohime fell deeply in love with him, but Anchin, being a monk, could not return her affection.
Anchin promised to return, but when he failed to keep his promise, Kiyohime became consumed by anger and jealousy. In her overwhelming passion, she transformed into a giant serpent and pursued Anchin to Dojoji Temple.
Anchin sought refuge beneath the temple’s great bronze bell. Kiyohime, in serpent form, wrapped herself around the bell and, according to the legend, set it ablaze, killing Anchin inside.
The tragic tale became one of Japan’s best-known stories of love, obsession, jealousy, and transformation, inspiring generations of artists as well as famous Noh, Kabuki, and Bunraku performances.
This striking 1978 ceramic plate captures the dramatic spirit of this legendary story in hand painted form. It is signed “Rosalie” and dated 1978.
