The box has a wonderfully simple, utilitarian form with thick wood panels and a deep, spacious interior. Its visible dovetail construction and overall craftsmanship appear consistent with a late 19th to early 20th century handmade storage box, likely circa 1890s–1920s. The lid opens fully and is supported by a metal stay, while sturdy metal drop handles on the sides make the box easy to carry.

The brass-tone front latch, side carrying handles, hinges and interior lid support appear somewhat newer than the wooden box itself and may have been replaced or added later in its life. I love that detail because it suggests this was a genuinely useful piece that continued to be maintained rather than simply preserved as decoration.

Its clean square shape works beautifully today as a keepsake chest, blanket or textile storage box, record or book storage, office storage, or simply as a decorative antique wooden box.
