Add a grand, elegant, and auspicious presence to your mantle or entryway console with this large 18-inch vintage Japanese Kutani porcelain okimono (statue). Depicting Jurojin, the traditional God of Wisdom and Longevity, this beautifully sculpted figurine serves as a powerful symbol of good fortune, long life, and scholastic success.
Dating to the mid-century Showa period, the piece displays masterful craftsmanship featuring a striking contrast of mediums. The deity's face, long flowing beard, and hands are rendered in a warm, unglazed matte bisque porcelain, while his majestic robes are finished in a glossy, pale celadon-gray glaze. The robe is intensely detailed with raised, hand-applied white slip moriage beading that traces elaborate floral wheels, scrolling clouds, and sacred crane medallions. Jurojin is depicted holding his iconic gnarled longevity staff and a sacred scroll document. The underside of the base features an authentic, hand-painted iron-red calligraphic signature reading "九谷" (Kutani). An exceptional addition for collectors of Japanese ceramics or classic Chinoiserie accents.
