This lantern was used to signal the ship's position while underway. Ships were equipped with two lateral lanterns: one on the port side and one on the starboard side, allowing the ship's direction of travel to be identified at night. This particular example still bears its brass plate engraved with "STARBOARD," indicating that it is the starboard lantern.

Its copper structure displays a beautiful antique patina, with a brass handle and a thick, blue-tinted glass lens with concentric reliefs, characteristic of old navigation lights.

Now repurposed from its original function, this lantern makes a superb decorative object. It can be placed on a surface or hung and would be perfectly at home in a seaside house, on a terrace, in a veranda, or in a period interior.

A beautiful and authentic piece from the maritime world of the early 20th century, both decorative and steeped in history.

Good overall condition, with patina, oxidation and signs of use consistent with its age and former use on board a boat.
