A substantial pair of English cast iron garden urns on their original square plinths, dating to circa 1880. Of classic Campana form, the urns have strong neoclassical proportions and an architectural presence well suited to flanking an entrance, lining a garden path, or providing a focal point on a terrace.
Each urn has a broad flared rim edged with repeating molded decoration above a deeply fluted body. Set on a square base, the lower bowl is finished with bold gadrooning and rises from a turned stem above a spreading fluted foot.
The original cast iron plinths have slightly tapered sides and stepped bases. Raised corner supports cast into the top of each plinth position the base of each urn to hold the urn securely in place.
Finished in black, the cast iron has acquired an attractive weathered surface from generations of outdoor use. Each urn has a central drainage hole and, at approximately 40 pounds for the urn and 20 pounds for its plinth, has considerable weight and stability.
A classic pair of late 19th-century English garden urns, retaining their original plinths and particularly appealing for their useful scale, strong proportions and architectural form.
