Each chair features a gracefully curved upholstered back, dramatic open scroll arms, carved foliate and shell-style detailing, cabriole front legs and a warm fruitwood-tone finish.

The wood frames feature deliberate decorative distressing, including remarkably consistent darkened nicks, incised marks and tonal variations intended to give the finish an aged appearance. This intentional distressed character appears throughout both chairs and is distinct from normal wear acquired through use.

The richly patterned upholstery is predominantly deep burgundy/merlot with scrolling traditional motifs in complementary gold, olive, taupe and neutral tones. The upholstery appears original to the chairs and complements the warm wood frames beautifully.

Original manufacturer’s labels remain attached beneath both chairs and identify L. Powell Company, Inc. of Culver City, California. The labels identify the chairs as made in China.

With their dramatic scroll arms, carved legs and richly colored upholstery, these chairs make a substantial decorative statement and would work beautifully as a matched pair in a traditional living room, library, bedroom or fireside seating arrangement.
