This restful landscape is an early 19th-century watercolor depicting the historic Leixlip Bridge spanning the River Liffey in Leixlip, County Kildare, Ireland.
SUBJECT, THEN: Built primarily between 1732 and 1734, the Leixlip Bridge utilizes a classic Georgian multi-arch configuration to safely manage the Liffey's strong currents and seasonal flooding. Specifically, the larger semi-circular, or Roman arches span the deeper water, maximizing structural stability over wider sections of the river channel. The smaller openings visible on the left side are ogival arches, typically referred to as pointed arches, recognized by the apex or "point" at the top center. Historically, these smaller pointed openings were frequently engineered into the approach rampways to serve as relief structures—allowing floodwaters to flow safely through the upper banks during heavy rises rather than washing out the road. The bridge features robust, ashlar limestone triangular cutwaters on its piers. These stone wedges split the flow of water and protect the structural integrity of the masonry.
SUBJECT, TODAY: While the modern road deck has been leveled and widened over the generations to accommodate regional vehicle traffic, the structural arches beneath still retain the distinct, traditional rising silhouette as depicted here.
Today, the Leixlip Bridge is officially protected under Ireland's National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH). It is celebrated as one of the oldest surviving intact stone bridges crossing the upper reaches of the River Liffey. Though surrounded by modern infrastructure, it continues to serve as an active transport corridor and a crucial visual symbol of County Kildare's historic civic engineering.
ARTWORK CREATION: The artist used a delicate wash technique characteristic of the late Georgian or early Victorian era. The palette is dominated by earth tones—sepia, muted ochre, soft forest greens, and indigo gray sky washes. The artwork’s measurements match the standard proportions of historical British and Irish topographical sketchbooks of the period.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent.
