The centerpiece is a beautifully modeled duck, exceptionally detailed throughout, with individually articulated feathers creating an almost naturalistic surface. The body is crafted from cast resin in subtle shades of white, cream and soft gray, beautifully contrasted by the finely modeled brass beak and webbed feet. The small inset malevolti maker’s emblem on the body provides an important and attractive detail confirming the maker. The sculptural duck stands upon an unusually elegant two-tier oval metal base combining contrasting silver-tone and golden brass finishes. This sophisticated combination of warm and cool metallic surfaces gives the lamp a particularly luxurious appearance and distinguishes it from the simpler malevolti duck lamps more commonly found with stone or travertine bases. A slender brass stem rises behind the sculpture to support the large oval shade. The lamp is fitted with two high-quality e26/e27 bulb sockets, each individually adjustable by means of a small screw, allowing the position and height of the sockets to be altered. The elaborate twin-light construction provides generous illumination while maintaining the beautifully balanced proportions of the design. The large oval shade is finished with coordinating gold-tone trim and crowned by an elegant polished brass finial, completing the sophisticated 1970s italian composition. Elli malevolti is particularly recognized for highly detailed animal sculptures combining hand-finished resin with brass elements. Period examples of malevolti lighting were produced in association with artiflex, and documented duck lamps share the characteristic resin-and-brass construction and refined italian regency aesthetic seen here. A rare, highly decorative and beautifully executed example of italian 1970s hollywood regency design, equally successful as functional lighting and as a sculptural statement piece.
