This sophisticated piece is distinguished by the remarkable quality and complexity of its construction. The architectural brass framework combines slender tubular elements with beautifully cast decorative details, including sculptural scrollwork, finely shaped finials and gracefully curved feet. A tall, elegantly arched carrying handle completes the beautifully balanced silhouette. Particularly noteworthy are the two substantial panels of thick smoked glass. Their considerable weight and quality give the piece a luxurious appearance while providing a beautiful contrast to the warm golden tones of the brass. Each glass panel is carefully secured by multiple purpose-made brass fittings, demonstrating the unusually elaborate construction of this magazine rack. The combination of smoked glass, polished brass and ornamental detailing creates a sophisticated bridge between Italian Mid-Century Modern and Hollywood Regency design. Despite its decorative character, the design remains remarkably light and architectural. Identical examples have been documented as Italian manufacture, and surviving labeled examples confirm the Italian origin of this distinctive model. Comparable examples are sometimes incorrectly attributed to French makers such as Maison Baguès or Maison Jansen; documented Italian labels, however, establish Italy as the country of manufacture. The rack retains a beautiful authentic vintage appearance, with age-related patina, oxidation and traces of use to the brass that underline its approximately seventy-year history. The smoked glass presents beautifully and contributes significantly to the substantial overall weight of approximately 5 kg (11 lbs). A highly decorative yet functional piece of Italian postwar design, equally suited beside a sofa, lounge chair or fireplace and particularly compelling in a sophisticated Mid-Century Modern or Hollywood Regency interior.
