A striking signed and dated North Carolina studio pottery platter attributed to potter Bet Mangum, created in 2008.
This substantial hand-built platter features an organic elongated form with a wonderfully irregular, undulating rim. Its richly layered abstract glaze combines deep cobalt blue, turquoise and celadon tones with earthy iron brown, cream and smoky gray. Gestural lines, speckling, glaze runs and overlapping areas of color give the surface an expressive, almost painterly quality.
The underside is hand-inscribed with a mark that appears to read “Bet Mangum 08.” The signature, date and known history of the Mangum pottery family strongly support attribution to Bet Garrison Mangum (1946–2009), a North Carolina potter associated with Mangum Pottery at Turkey Knob near Sparta, North Carolina.
Bet Mangum and her husband, Robin “Rob” Mangum Sr., established their pottery operation in North Carolina in the 1970s and became part of the state’s important studio pottery tradition. Bet continued working as a potter until shortly before her death in January 2009, making the 2008 date on this piece particularly notable as an example from the final period of her career.
Approximately 16 inches long and 2 inches high, the platter has considerable sculptural presence. Its freeform silhouette and expressive glaze allow it to function beautifully as a decorative centerpiece or displayed studio pottery object.
Signed/inscribed and dated on the underside.
