A wonderfully atmospheric antique bamboo plant stand or tall occasional table dating to approximately 1890–1910. Its slender proportions and richly mottled surface are characteristic of the bamboo furniture associated with the late Victorian Aesthetic Movement, when European and American interiors embraced Japanese-inspired forms and natural materials.
Four gently splayed bamboo legs support a square wooden top framed with narrow bamboo trim. Diagonal bamboo braces create architectural V-shaped details beneath the apron, while lower stretchers provide additional support and visual balance. The bamboo has been carefully scorched to produce its distinctive “tortoiseshell,” “tiger bamboo” or “burnt bamboo” coloration—a layered combination of honey, amber, chestnut and dark brown.
The square wooden top retains a warm, beautifully aged surface with visible grain, old nail heads and the kind of authentic variation that only develops through time and use. Its tall, narrow footprint makes this piece especially useful where a conventional side table would feel too broad or visually heavy.
Use it as a plant or jardinière stand, sculpture pedestal, tall drinks table, lamp table, entryway accent or compact bedside table. It would also make an elegant display stand for a piece of blue-and-white porcelain, an orchid, a bust or a favorite vessel.
The form is closely associated with English Aesthetic Movement bamboo furniture; however, the table is unmarked and its maker and precise country of origin remain unknown. The pencil notation beneath the top appears to be an old inventory or ownership marking rather than a maker’s signature.
“Tortoiseshell” refers only to the decorative coloration of the scorched bamboo. No animal shell is present.
STYLING IDEAS
For an English country or traditional interior, pair the table with a blue-and-white ceramic vessel filled with hydrangeas, alongside linen upholstery, antique brass and collected artwork.
In a British Colonial, Chinoiserie or Palm Beach-inspired room, use it beside a wicker chair or campaign-style chest with a small lamp, stacked books or tropical foliage.
Its natural material and graphic silhouette also work beautifully in an organic modern interior, where it can introduce age and warmth beside cleaner contemporary furniture, plaster walls, sisal rugs or neutral upholstery.
Designed for interior use. If displaying a live plant, use a watertight liner or protective saucer. The table should not be exposed to rain or prolonged exterior moisture.
CONDITION
Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. The bamboo and wooden top display scratches, rubbing, finish variation, small surface losses, natural checking and darkening. Evidence of an old repair or stabilization, including adhesive and small metal fasteners, is visible beneath the top at one of the brace connections. Slight irregularities are consistent with the table’s handmade construction.
