Standing an impressive 16 inches tall and weighing nearly 9 pounds, this substantial baluster-form vase is richly hand decorated with numerous haloed Rakan (Arhats), the disciples of Buddha, surrounding a central female Buddhist figure. The densely populated figural decoration is sometimes referred to by collectors and dealers as “1000 Faces” Satsuma.

The decoration continues around the entire body and neck, with individually rendered expressive faces, elaborate patterned robes, stylized waves, geometric and brocade-inspired motifs, fine linework, polychrome enameling, and extensive gilding. The variety of faces and textile-like patterns is particularly striking when viewed up close.

The tall waisted neck is flanked by a pair of large molded and gilded dragon-form handles, giving the vase an especially sculptural presence. Additional Rakan figures and intricate patterned decoration continue around the neck between the handles.

The underside bears a gilt Japanese signature/cartouche consistent with Ryuzan (龍山 / Ryuzan) together with the circular cross-form Shimazu mon, an emblem traditionally associated with Satsuma ware. The mark and underside are shown clearly in the photographs.

The ivory-toned earthenware body displays the fine crackled glaze characteristic of antique Satsuma ware. The interior is finished in a creamy ivory crackle glaze.

A substantial and highly decorative example of Japanese Meiji-period Satsuma, notable for its large scale, extensive hand-painted figural decoration, generous use of gilding, and dramatic molded handles. It presents beautifully from every angle and would make an impressive addition to a collection of Japanese ceramics, Meiji-period decorative arts, or antique Asian art.
