The Harlequin - a' Paris
A beautiful and entirely original mid-century print from legendary French Fauvist Painter Raoul Dufy.
A wonderful example of the bright, decorative 1920s style that is an anchor of early 10rh C. Design and Art Deco aesthetics.
As you would expect from Dufy, this piece presents with wonderful colors, atop a pen and ink sketch. The argyle / diamond flair of the costume, surrounded by Parisian scenes.
Print itself is lovely with only a very soft - and very even patina. Bright, crisp, presents nicely.
And the frame is equally interesting! Like none we have ever seen...heavy, artisan crafted in wood and gilt with a texture and an almost gesso finish in putty / white that is very appealing. Frame shows the patina of age and some moisture, but we think it actually enhances the authenticity of the over impression.
31" tall, 25.25" wide, 1" deep.
Artist signed in the print - still bright and distinctly Dufy.
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
My husband loves Dufy, and we are fortunate to open two small "studio" pieces from late in the Artist's life in our collection.
While this is "just a print," it is an EARLY print, made to the most exacting art and gallery standards of the early/mid 20th Century.
Owning one of these would have been a fine thing for sure years ago, as evidenced by the fantastic frame! The frame is art in and of itself! Which is exactly why we have not touched it.
So, invest your own story about it, which would have pleased Dufy very much! Maybe your mother or grandmother brought this home from her Grand Tour? Perhaps it was discovered in the attic of a fine family home...you can take it from here...
