A documented matched set of four French carved oak chairs in the Louis XIII hunting style, circa 1860, accompanied by the original 2001 Elke’s Antiques certificate and a 2006 appraisal.
The chairs feature tall oval upholstered backs surrounded by elaborate carved and pierced decoration, including floral and foliate motifs, carved birds, scrolling ornament and central blind oval cartouches. Barley-twist stiles rise to turned finials, while the lower frames incorporate ball-and-block front legs and barley-twist stretchers.
The oval backs and seats are upholstered in coordinating blue-gray, cream and gold cut velvet.
The original certificate from Elke’s Antiques, Ramstein-Miesenbach, Germany, identifies the set as “4 Stühle, Frankreich / Jagdstyl Louis XIII / um 1860. Eiche” — four chairs, France, Louis XIII hunting style, circa 1860, oak.
The set is also documented in a September 26, 2006 appraisal by The Specialists of the South, Inc. The appraisal describes the group as a “Set of Four Chairs,” noting the ornately carved and pierced wide crests, blind cartouches, barley-twist stiles with finials, ball-and-block front legs, barley-twist stretchers, oval inset upholstered backs, cut-velvet upholstery, oak construction and circa-1860 date. The appraisal assigned the set a retail replacement value of $4,800 in 2006.
Three of the four chairs have known restoration needs. One chair has damage to the upper carved crest; the detached original carved section is retained and included with the set. A second chair has a broken upper finial/spindle element; its detached original piece is also retained and included. A third chair has a broken/separated front stretcher beneath the seat. These conditions are clearly documented in the listing photographs.
Despite the restoration needs, the chairs remain a visually cohesive and highly decorative nineteenth-century matched set retaining extensive carved detail.
Sold only as a set of four.

Three of the four chairs have known repair needs. One chair has substantial damage to the upper carved crest; the detached original carved section is included and appears to correspond to the damaged area, but professional restoration will be required. A second chair has a broken upper finial/spindle element; the detached original piece is included and fits the break, but repair will require skilled woodworking. A third chair has a broken/separated front stretcher/cross piece beneath the seat that should be professionally repaired before regular seating use. The fourth chair does not have one of these three major known defects. Additional age-related wear includes minor carving losses, finish variation, surface marks and evidence of prior repairs consistent with furniture of this age. Cut-velvet upholstery remains generally presentable. Offered as a matched restoration set and priced accordingly. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. less
