An exceptionally elaborate French carved oak armchair in the Louis XIII style, circa 1860, accompanied by a certificate from Elke’s Antiques identifying the chair as French, Louis XIII style, circa 1860, and constructed of oak.
The monumental high-backed chair features a richly carved architectural crest with a central heraldic monogrammed medallion flanked by a dramatic pair of opposing winged griffins. The tall back is framed by pierced foliate carving and prominent barley-twist uprights terminating in turned finials.
The open arms incorporate later upholstered armrests and unusually expressive carved lion-head terminals. Barley-twist supports and stretchers continue throughout the lower frame, creating a highly sculptural and visually commanding profile.
The chair is upholstered in a later tapestry-style textile depicting period figures, foliage, birds and animals in muted cream, green, blue and burgundy tones. The upholstery is a later replacement and is not represented as original to the circa-1860 chair.
The chair was acquired through Elke’s Antiques in Ramstein-Miesenbach, Germany. It was subsequently restored and reupholstered by Elke’s Antiques. The original certificate will accompany the chair.
This is a substantial statement chair well suited to a library, study, entry hall, historic interior, or collected room.
